National Analogue Terrestrial Stations

The channels are available via an antenna with an analogue TV set.

  • BBC One - Run by the BBC, funded by a yearly mandatory licence fee.
  • BBC Two - Run by the BBC, funded by a yearly mandatory licence fee.
  • ITV1 - Independent commercial broadcaster. Called UTV in N. Ireland, STV & Grampian in Scotland and Channel in the Channel Islands.
  • Channel 4 - State-owned commercial broadcaster. Not available in Wales.
  • S4C - Independent commercial broadcaster, partly financed by the licence fee. 50% of programming is in Welsh. Wales only.
  • five - Independent commercial broadcaster. Is often incorrectly referred to by its original name, Channel 5. Is still not available in the whole of the UK.

National Digital Terrestrial Stations

The channels are available via an antenna with a digital adapter on your existing TV set.

Television stations

These channels are available on digital aerial, satellite and cable systems.

Many channels have a "timeshift" or "+1" service. This is an identical channel carrying the same programmes delayed by one hour to give viewers another chance to catch a favourite programme. These channels are not included in the table above.

Regional channels

Recent years have seen a succession of regional, often community based, television channels start operating. Often these are tied to a particular city, but available in surrounding areas.

  • Faze TV - Television channel targeted towards gay men. Will start broadcasting in September 2005.
  • INK - Planned joint venture kids channel between ITV and Nickelodeon.
  • More4 - New from Channel 4, broadcasting property and lifestyle programs (was scheduled to launch in the last quarter of 2004)

  • BBC World - formerly World Service Television
  • BBC Prime - entertainment channel available in Europe, Africa, Middle East
  • BBC America - US Market British Entertainment Channel
  • BBC Canada - Canadian Market British Entertainment Channel
  • BBC Japan - Japanese market British Entertainment Channel
  • BBC Kids - Canada-broadcast children's channel
  • BBC Food - Southern Africa/Scandinavia
  • People+Arts - Latin America/Iberia
